Papers, 1854-1907, consist of correspondence, handwritten casualty lists, a casebook, a scrapbook, military orders, clippings and printed materials that document Grant's Civil War experiences. The casebook, kept by Dr. W.H. Sheets of Madison (Ind.) General Hospital, records soldiers' medical conditions, focusing on cases of gangrene. Also, a regimental history of the 5th Wisconsin Division, narrative accounts of the Battle of Fair Oaks as well as engagements from Tennessee to Atlanta, Ga., and a list of mortalities due to cholera in Newark, N.J. (1854).

Grant, Gabriel, 1826-1912

Gabriel Grant (1826-1912), a Newark, N.J. physician and Civil War surgeon. In 1854, Grant served on a special health commission to combat the cholera epidemic in Newark. During the Civil War, Grant was surgeon of the 2nd Infantry Regiment of New Jersey Volunteers and French's Brigade, was designated Surgeon of the United States Volunteers by Congress, and was later placed in command of the U.S. Army Hospital at Madison, Ind. He served at the battles of Bull Run, Fair Oaks, Gaines' Mill, Malvern ...
